When the students came into the class last Friday morning, I had them go to the back carpet, where I read stories for them, and where we have mini lessons.
On the whiteboard was a question: What’s in the box?
I asked the students to guess what was in the box, I had the answers: a Mr. Man, a toy, and gummy bears. While eliciting their ideas I tried to ask questions to help students better explain their reasons for their ideas. While we were busy generating ideas, the students came up with some questions of their own:
- Why is there an X on the box?
- Why is there a [plastic] cover [over the paper packing list]?
- Why is there an ISBN number? (They have been learning about the parts of books and this was a reference to the bar code.)
- Why is the box red?
- Why is the corner bent?
The questions soon became more fun for them than guessing ideas.
After our discussion it was time to open the box. Out came a ribbon, QR codes, letters, Elmo, and or course, Bobby. For the rest of the day, Bobby joined us with our activities through the day.
We have a few days off now, but the students are excited to come back to start our new unit and learn with Bobby.
