We had the chance of having Stevie visiting us in Singapore. We had to share him between different classrooms as many children wanted to see and meet him.
In the first classroom, Stevie visited all the places around the school that were wheelchair friendly. The children looked and pushed Stevie up the ramp coming from the carpark. They found toilets which were designed to be used if you were in a wheelchair. Finally, the children and Stevie went up and down in the lift with him.
In the second classroom, Stevie learnt about ballet. The children were fond of ballet and, as such, decided to research ballet for disabled people and were amazed by lots of videos showing valid and disabled people dancing together. The children decided to make Stevie a ‘ballet wand’ and dressed him up in ballet clothes…and we were all in for a treat! Stevie then carried on being active, he rode on tricycles, went on slides, went across monkey bars. He built trust and relationships with the children.
Finally, in the third classroom, Stevie discovered how it was possible to do many things even if a body part is impaired. The children experienced painting blindfolded, with their mouths and also with their feet!
We hope Stevie enjoyed his stay in Singapore and we are thrilled he is about his trip to Thailand. We will continue to raise awareness on equal opportunities and how to reduce inequalities at school.
