We are so sad to see Jerry go but we have such fantastic memories of his time with us at GEMS World Academy Switzerland. He came at just the right time too, as we were making a start on our new unit of inquiry about materials and their uses.
Jerry taught us all about Sustainable Development Goal 12 and we brainstormed about all the different ways we use different resources in out daily lives.
We decided to focus on making a difference in our school community by focussing on plastic consumption in Grade 1. We collected all the plastic that we used during our snack times and our lunches for one week, and we were very surprised by just how much plastic we used.
After learning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and how sea life suffers from all this dumped plastic we thought about ways we can make a difference and get others in our school community to reduce the amount of plastic they are using.
We are still in the process of preparing our ‘Pitch on Plastic’, with Jerry as our mascot, and we have a schedule all drawn up to visit the Grade 2-5 classes at our school to make them aware just how important it is to look after our planet.
We hope to Skype and share out experiences with other classes who have had Jerry visit them, and would love to hear from you!!
Of course that’s not all Jerry got up to at our school. He listened to cool podcasts we us, played fun games, learned some French and took part in our daily ‘Show and Tell’ sessions.
We just wish we could’ve spent longer with him so we could have taken him on some of our upcoming class trips during the rest of the unit. We had our midterm holiday (a whole week off school!) during the time Jerry was with us, but for the time he visited us he really inspired us to make a positive change in our community!
